At first, we had no intention of ever starting a martial arts academy. We were just a group of guys who Loved Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, and wanted to practice it every day, all day. When I say EVERYDAY & ALL DAY, I really mean it. If you have or are currently practicing Jiu Jitsu you know exactly, what I mean. We were and I still am totally addicted.
I’ve got to say the first Brazilian Jiu Jitsu academy, I attended, was absolutely perfect. I could have trained there forever. But like the other guys who started Team Randori, life happened and we had to leave our first love. We all bounced around for the next couple of years, going from gym to gym, trying to find that perfect place. But for one reason or another it was impossible. It was crazy, some of the things we were exposed to at the gyms. One gym was like joining a cult. The instructor was a narcissist, asking the students to be his devout followers, praise the ground he walked on and oh by the way pay him for everything. One gym was so filthy, it was a miracle we didn’t get Methicilln-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) or Ringworm on a daily basis. One gym, was the cheapest place in the world. Funny, we would comment that we were waiting for them to ask us to pay for the toilet paper by the sheet. We weren’t finding what we were looking for.
We went extreme. We decided to do it ourselves. No not opening a gym…. We got some puzzle mats, and started practicing anywhere we could find room. One day we set up in the gym area of an apartment. Yep people who lived there though we were crazy, grappling in right there in an open space of the gym, sliding off the mats, getting carpet burn and choking one another out. Man was that fun. But that did not last, so we got more mats and started training in the basement of my house. The house was the perfect place but it quickly got crowded and we had to figure something else out to accommodate everyone.
“You guys should Open Your Own Place.” What? Did someone really say that? We never really thought about that, but could we? How would we do it, could we do? These were all questions that were not in our heads. The more we thought about it the more this could become a reality. Pursue a dream? Is that really a thing? Do people actually, try and pursue their dreams in life?
August 2014, we opened the doors to Team Randori. We bounced around with the name of the Academy, and what would be our main focus. We knew we wanted to take all the good aspects we discovered from all the gyms and academies we trained at and bring them here to Team Randori and none of the bad. It boiled down to three basic elements:
- Make it affordable
- Provide the best available instruction, training and experience to the student possible
- Make the academy SAFE
Our goal is to teach Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. If your trying to learn self-defense, train for a hobby, to be a champion, for your kids to give them confidence, and to defend themselves, to better your health and if nothing else to have fun. We want to give you the best Jiu Jitsu experience possible. From the impeccable training area, to the instructors we want to give you the best.
So, if you’re looking for a place to learn Brazilian Jiu Jitsu for yourself or your kids, there are many places in the area. I would say check em out. They may offer something for you. We know we aren’t right for everyone.
But if you’re looking for something much more than the average. Want to be part of something bigger. A place where you’re the focus, its safe, and development is our goal. Then we may be the place for you.
