From the onset Brazilian Jiu Jitsu was formed from Kodokan Judo, ground fighting (newaza) and was taught by a number of individuals including Takeo Yano, Mitsuyo Maeda and Soshihrio Satake. Eventually Brazilian Jiu Jitsu became its own form or martial art through the experiments, practices, and adaptation of judo through Carlos and Hélio Gracie, who passed their techniques and knowledge to their families and other instructors who were students of Maeda.

The major concept of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is that it teaches techniques that enable a smaller, weaker person to successfully defend against a bigger, stronger person by using leverage, body positioning and applying joint-locks and choke-holds.

Martial arts aren’t equal. Some are practical for self-defense and street fighting. Others rely more on traditional skills and values. Some are oriented towards only fighting one opponent. Some have skills which will help you defend against multiple attackers. 

Many traditional martial arts like Karate and Taekwondo have nice qualities but fail during a real-life application. These Martial Arts teach nice patterns or Katas of movements but do not address any kind of movement required when a person is pushed or held to the ground. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) is actually a grappling-based martial art whose central theme is the skill of controlling a resisting opponent in ways that force him to submit. A lot of martial arts were super effective in their early stages, however over time they got diluted. You see martial arts are taught by people and this is similar to story-telling.
